Hogs trying to make up ground with MVSU
Arkansas (13-8, 3-3) will play 3 mid week games this week against Mississippi Valley State (1-20, 1-9). The Hogs will play the Delta Devils twice on Tuesday starting at 3:05 in Baum Stadium before driving down to play in North Little Rock Wednesday at 6:35. MVSU has been shutout 6 times this season including 3 times to the hand of Alabama.
MVSU brings a team .220 average to Fayetteville with 0 home runs and 47 RBI. They have struck out 198 times to only 48 walks and have a .288 on base percentage while slugging .260. Freshman catcher Arrington Smith is the lone standout on the team with a .297 average including 6 doubles and 4 RBI. He has also walked 11 times on the way to a .409 on base percentage.
The Devils' pitching staff is very similar on paper to that of Grambling State. They carry a 8.08 ERA and have given up 229 hits, 195 runs (153 earned), and 101 walks with 81 strikeouts over 170.1 innings. Teams are hitting .326 against them with 56 doubles, 9 triples and 15 home runs. The MVSU defense is fielding at a .942 clip after making 44 errors in the early season. Their staff ace, senior Jonathan Parker is 0-3 in 6 starts with a 3.82 ERA and has 21 strikeouts to 19 walks over 37.2 innings. Hitters have batted .255 against him and he has hit 8 batters.
Arkansas added a game to this original 2 game series to make up for the lost opportunity to win another mid week game against IPFW earlier this year when the game was canceled due to weather. The Hogs should more than make up for the win as they will look to find their bats this week leading up to a SEC road series with Mississippi State. Colin Poche (1-1, 0.77) will get the start in the first game Tuesday with freshman James Teague (0-0, 0.00) starting the night cap. Alex Phillips (1-0, 2.25) will get the start in the finale on Wednesday.
